Jaya Lyons

Arts Mid North Coast

Jaya Liron Lyons, otherwise known as Jaya Liron, was born in Tweed Heads and raised primarily in Port Macquarie. With 10 years of experience in digital art, Liron holds a deep admiration for all forms of artistic expression. While skilled in a wide variety of mediums, sculpture has consistently captured most of her attention. Her goal is to create art for a living, with aspirations to subcontract and work on movie set props and puppets, as well as further develop her 3D modelling skills.

Liron has worked with the Port Macquarie Hastings Council and Headspace, providing curated art workshops and artwork for the 2023 Youth Week Pineapple Week. Attending cosplay events in 2022, Liron came first in craftsmanship in both the events held at Wauchope and Port Macquarie. She additionally won the Hastings Secondary College “Artwork of the Year 2022” and was featured in the PortNews article for the Wauchope Cosplay Festival 2022.

Liron’s 2024 projects included finalising her viral Shadow the Hedgehog sculpture, which was sold online to a collector in the USA, creating murals for the 2024 ArtWalk, leading workshops for Luminosity, and working on various private digital arts commissions.

Cosplay Mask

Artwork description

Untitled work in progress, 2024, Textiles

Artist Statement

I took on this cosplay mask project to develop and showcase my growing skills within textile use and sculpture. I hold cosplay dear to my heart and decided this project will be a warming final nod to this particular art form from which I treasured from a young age. This untitled artwork is a wearable mascot mask; of which is unfinished. This cosplay mask is reminiscent of a canine, the shape reflecting anime and cartoons features; big eyes, exaggerated features and intriguing patterns. This mask was handmade from faux fur and upholstery foam, carved and glued over many layers and then shaped by scissors.

This project tested my knowledge between the relationship of shapes and faux fur, allowing me to harness a satisfactory balance between the two. This particular art form has led me to experiment with art in a similar form, leading me to develop a life size Shadow The Hedgehog plush sculpture which was sold to a collector in the USA in May 2024. I aim to dive deeper into that genre of art and installation in the future as I yearn to create treasured pop culture characters into real statues, plush sculptures and puppets.
