Artist Statement

Rosie is a love letter to my last year as a teenager. As I transition from girlhood to womanhood I have begun to face bittersweet truths about my life as this phase begins to end. Rosie explores the gap between girl and woman, the connection between matriarchs and their legacies as well as self-growth. I want other people my age to know that it’s ok to make mistakes and to grow from them.

The idea initially sprung after studying “The Outsiders” in year nine English. A tiny detail in the book alludes to how young girls were treated when they had “disgraced the family” in the 60s. Since then I’ve had Rosie’s story blossoming in my head. As I begin to move onto acting school and move away from home, I am faced with the worry of making mistakes and wasting my youth when my life truly hasn’t started.

Greta Gerwig’s 2017 film “Ladybird” has left a large impact on me. The mother-daughter dynamic and the growth that Christine (Ladybird) experiences is a large inspiration.

I often find time to write in my lunch break at my full-time job, when I have a spare minute or at home amongst other commitments. Most of the time it is the scribbling of an idea and coming back to edit. I’m often sifting through dialogue, actions or scene ideas that come to me. Although I was unable to film this year, I am very proud of this story and how far I have come as a writer and a performer. I know for certain that I am far from finished with this project and I hope to present it in the near future
