Artist Statement
I wrote Ricochet in early 2023. This song is about how sometimes we can wear a mask that distorts who we actually are in order to seem more appealing to those around us. The problem with this is that once we’ve worn it for so long we can become accustomed to certain norms of society that restrict us and we forget who we actually are. In this song, I wrote “Are you living, or are you just alive”, because to me there is a difference between the two; how are we living if we aren’t being honest with ourselves? Therefore I stress the importance of authenticity and hope that as I grow older I won’t forget who I am or what I love most of all, which is making and performing music.
I recorded this song over the course of my HSC in 2024. I originally wasn’t aiming for such a techno/pop genre, however, I am glad I have done this now so that I can go forward and experiment with other genres. I outsourced and recorded with a producer in Brisbane named Levi Russel. therefore I used my own recording gear to record my vocals at home in my bedroom. This was the first time I’d really gone through the full process of recording and producing. It was extremely helpful having my mentor Leisha throughout the process as she was able to explain certain stages and what I should expect. She also has given me tips for the release and marketing. I now hope to release this song in early February 2025.
