Faith Devlin

West Darling Arts

Heya, I’m Faith and I’m an artist from Broken Hill in the Far West. Living in the desert for most of my life, I like to draw inspiration from the scenes and the people that live in my community, as well as comic artists and other illustrators such as Clara Meath, Kim Jung Gi, Karl Kopinski and Jon Stich. Using primarily ink, but experimenting with many mediums recently, I like to make fun and detailed illustrations that are most often always anecdotal and have some humour in them. It is an interesting way for me to stay connected with people back home, since I have been studying a diploma in visual arts in Adelaide, swapping stories and using (what always feels like, but never have issue with) a large of theatrical flare to embellish small changes in our day to day.
My love for using ink as a medium has given me a great interest in tattooing as a future career, and currently I am studying and working on my portfolio in order to become a tattoo artist. I have a passion for the Far West, and work within my community to bring awareness to social issues that young people face. I want my home to be a safe and exciting place where queer people like myself can thrive creatively, without judgement.

Artist Statement

These artworks are all varying pieces from across the year, all untitled. Some have been done for my course work, and some personally, and overall are pieces that I really like and learnt a lot when completing them. I look at them and are able to see my improvement technically and conceptually, and get to remember and reminisce on the memories and the stories that came across during their creation.

With my mentor’s help, I’ve been able to create much more regularly over the course of the year. Sally helped me in understanding a creative flow and how to get creative practice in wherever you are. My artistic output was much more than it really ever has been, and I’ve been able to experiment widely with many different creative fields and dip my toes into other possible fields. It’s broadened my outlook on what I am capable of, of what I enjoy doing, and helped my understand my personal art style more.
