Artist Statement

My name is Dean Schatzman, and this showcase presents three pieces of artwork created in two different mediums. The first two works are realistic graphite pencil sketches: one of a lion and one of an elephant. The third piece is a whale shark sculpture made from cardboard and papier-mâché, painted with acrylics. Each piece contributes to a larger theme that explores the beauty and fragility of the natural world. Through these works, I aim to capture the inherent majesty of animals and the delicate balance of the ecosystems they inhabit.

The lion and elephant, subjects often associated with strength and nobility, remind us of the diverse creatures that sustain our planet. The whale shark sculpture, with its intricate texture and vibrant colour, serves as a symbol of the vulnerability of marine life. I hope that through my art, viewers are moved to reflect on the wonder and beauty of nature. By focusing on the detailed expressions of these animals and the materials used to craft their forms, I want to draw attention to the fragility of our world. It is my hope that this work inspires greater awareness and a sense of urgency to protect our ecosystems. The message is clear: the beauty of the natural world is fragile, and it is up to all of us to take action and preserve it for future generations.
