Ruth Cant

Outback Art

I grew up in Central West NSW on a grazing and cropping property, but was always restless to move to and work in the city…

A reality check of 30Tonne chaser bin tractor driving, Women’s made-to-measure suits in Fitzroy Melbourne, graphic design for our local Warren Chamber Music Festival, Preschool bus wrapping, farm machinery marketing, and most recently publicity officer for Warren Museum and Art Gallery, has helped me realise just what I have at my doorstep.

My home town has given me the opportunity to develop my skills from nothing. I am thrilled that the community have believed in me and given me the opportunity to have a go. They have trusted me to grow.

I undertook the 2024 Horizons Program, which introduced me to a whole new world of creatives living, working and just being themselves in rural NSW. This was an incredible encouragement to me.

I love quirky things, rough things, neat things and to eat things (after Dr. Seus).

I work in graphic design – with the modern tools – but I crave to use pens, Tombow texta’s and all things tactile. I also work with mechanics, where choreography and videography is matched with their raw enthusiasm.

Artist Statement

I have always loved stop motion video. I feel it gives life to the inanimate objects.

Illustration has always been a passion. People and their fashion are a favourite, exotic style and personalities are able to be portrayed in a different light to a photo.

My acrylic chair painting was influenced by Newcastle artist, Rachel Milne. Her loose and painterly style draws me into her works.

The portrait of Margaret-Rose started as a portrait sitting back in 2022, and was the beginning of the friendship of a lifetime! Almost 4 times my age, we share a love for colour, style and our town. This started as an acrylic, and now has evolved to using Tombow texta’s and felt tip pens. I feel this medium captures the textures and layers of her personality.

Saltbush Providore is small batch muesli. The branding was a collaborative process with the client; creating the logo, colour scheme, packaging… the whole vibe!

Warren Chamber Music Festival is a big deal! Developing the programs, posters and logo upgrade have been pivotal to my experience in graphic design. Studying online with The Graphic Design School contributed to carrying the project to professionalism.

Western Farm Machinery gave me the freedom to present their business in a wide range of mediums; from radio ads and graphic design to choreography and videography! The social media reels did more than promote products, they built the team and customer loyalty.

The Eyewear posters were a study project that was just a whole lot of fun!
