Artist Statement
This collection contains three written works that best encapsulate my creative journey in 2024. Whilst diverse in form and content, these pieces are unified in their appreciation of ‘the soft animal of your body’.
‘Writerly Reflections and Olivera’s Human Stuff’ is a personal essay about being young, disorientated and full of anti-individualist fervour. This initial piece speaks directly to my community of creative youth and may offer some nostalgia to more established artists.
‘How to Rock the Boat: A Conversation with Qin Qin’ is a product of my journalistic ventures this year. The interview was originally published in the tenth anniversary edition of the Australian National University’s ‘Bossy Magazine’ (for which I sub-edited in 2024).
The final piece in the collection is my favourite review of Canberra theatre this year. I have fallen in love with this form of literary criticism, Honor Webster-Mannison’s ‘Work, But This Time Like You Mean It’ reinvigorating my admiration for absurdist theatre.
The collection is evidence of the joy I find in non-fiction, as well as the joy I find in any creative endeavour that is youth-orientated, feminist and absurd.
