Make the Connections
Textiles and Design
In 2024, a group of young fashion designers, textile artists and costume makers from across regional NSW participated in the Horizons mentorship program. They received tailored industry advice and guidance from their mentors, while also building lasting relationships and professional networks with one another.
About the Textiles & Design Group
This film highlights insights from the Textiles and Design Group who were mentored by artist and designer Jo Nathan. Comprising passionate creatives with interests in fashion, textile art, product design, and set design, the group participated in a Horizons meetup that brought them together from across NSW and offered a unique opportunity to attend an international fashion and trade show for the first time.
At the Fabrics of Multicultural Australia (FOMA), they explored the craftsmanship of 81 designers from 36 countries, showcasing both traditional attire and contemporary designs.
The day began at Hyde Park in Sydney, where the group engaged in ice-breaking creative activities that helped them connect and get to know one another. After preparing for the event, they toured the FOMA exhibition area, where they interacted with fashion designers and business owners displaying their work.
As the evening unfolded, the group mingled with attendees, captured memories in photos, and then experienced a vibrant runway show and performances. The event featured models, dancers, and artistic presentations representing cultures from across the globe, including Fiji, India, Bhutan, Kosovo, Uruguay, and more.
