Life is a Creative Process
Theatre & Musical Theatre
In 2024, a group of young theatre makers from across regional NSW participated in the Horizons mentorship program. They received tailored industry advice and guidance from their mentor, while also building lasting relationships and professional networks with one another.
About the Theatre & Musical Theatre groups
This film combines the perspectives and insights of two mentorship groups whose participants are passionate about the worlds of Theatre and Musical Theatre. They share why they love their craft and what both audiences and performers can take away from the experience of live theatre.
Our Theatre group was led by actor and theatre-maker Kate Smith, while our Music and Theatre group was guided by musician and actor Tim Hansen.
Theatre
The Theatre group met in Bathurst, where the Horizons participants were introduced to the world of professional theatre-making. The day began with an energising series of movement and physical theatre exercises led by mentor Kate, designed to help participants connect with their bodies and each other in new, expressive ways. These activities laid the foundation for a day of creative exploration, fostering trust and ensemble cohesion while introducing fresh approaches to performance.
Following the morning session, participants were treated to a guided tour of Charles Sturt University’s Theatre Media facilities by Karl Shead. They explored the behind-the-scenes workings of theatre and television, including an infinity wall, podcast studios, and professionally designed sets for news and talk shows. Karl’s talk on the technical aspects of production—such as set and costume design—offered valuable insights into the broader creative process.
In the afternoon, the group returned to the studio for in-depth acting work with Kate, applying newly learned techniques to personal performance pieces. The day concluded with a special directors’ workshop led by Bali Padda, followed by a live performance of Guards at the Taj—a powerful play by Rajiv Joseph, directed by Padda and presented by the National Theatre of Parramatta. This final experience allowed participants to reflect on the day’s lessons through the lens of a professional production.
Music and Theatre
The Music and Theatre meetup took place over two days. On the first day, the mentees met in person for the first time and quickly got to know one another. After sharing breakfast, they strolled along Circular Quay before arriving at the recording studio of music producer John Romeo. A quick vocal warm-up and group singalong set the tone, after which each participant selected a solo song to cover and professionally record, guided by John and their mentor, Tim Hansen. For some, this was their first time recording in a professional studio.
On the second day, the group had the unique opportunity to go backstage at the production of Hamilton. Participants toured the set and experienced what it’s like to stand on the stage of a large-scale musical. They also learned how the actors and production team coordinate such a complex show—gaining insights into prop handling, lighting techniques, costume design and storage, and the rotation of roles within the cast. It was an invaluable, behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of a major theatrical production.
