Writing & Publication

In 2024, a group of young Writers from across regional NSW participated in the Horizons mentorship program. They received tailored industry advice and guidance from their mentor, while also building lasting relationships and professional networks with one another.

About the Writing & Publication group

In this film, the Horizons group—mentored in Writing and Publication—share what they gained from the experience and what they learned about becoming professional writers. These young people were guided and supported by Gabrielle Tozer, author of novels and children’s books.

Our writing and publication mentees began their day with breakfast before exploring the Queen Victoria Building in search of creative inspiration. While admiring the Christmas tree, they were thrilled to discover an exhibition of illustrations by beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss. This unexpected find added a whimsical start to their literary journey.

Guided by their mentor, the group were invited into the offices of HarperCollins Publishers. There, they engaged with members of the children’s book department, asking insightful questions about the realities of working in publishing, the path to becoming a writer or illustrator, and the full process of getting a book published. Team members from various roles generously shared their personal experiences and career journeys, offering the mentees valuable behind-the-scenes perspectives.

After absorbing all that knowledge, the group visited Kinokuniya bookstore for some book browsing and shopping. They then made their way to the stunning State Library of New South Wales—a heritage-listed building ideal for sparking creativity and developing story ideas. To cap off their inspiring day, they attended the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Sunday at the iconic Sydney Opera House. Written by playwright Anthony Weigh and directed by Sarah Goodes, the play explored the life of Sunday Reed and her relationship with Australian artist Sidney Nolan, leaving the mentees with plenty of artistic food for thought.
