In October, the Fashion and Textiles group of the Horizons mentorship program — Sage, Emma, Cara, PJ, Ruby and their mentor Jo Nathan — met up in person for the first time!

They started the day by meeting up with the Illustration and Graphic Design Group whose meet-up fell on the same day, coming together in Hyde Park for a creative speed dating session to get to know about each other and their creative work.

Afterwards, the Fashion and Textiles group traveled to the Ivy Sunroom on George Street, which was the host for this year's Fabric of Modern Australia Exhibition and Runway Show. Here, the group was able to meet people and see the fashion and wares from a multicultural array of stall holders.

After some mingling and taking photos, the Horizons participants settled in for the runway show, an extravagant display of over 80 Artists and Designers from around the world, including nations such as Fiji, India, Bhutan, Kosovo, Uruguay and more. During the runway there were a variety of cultural dances and performances from the international cultures who were represented, and the event was an amazing experience for the mentees.

Last month, the First Nations mentees of the Horizons program met up in person for the first time!

Dean, Emily and Emma were hosted by Tania and Rodney from the Art Shack, and the group spent two days in professional development workshops presented by Lorrayne Fishenden from Aboriginal Regional Arts Alliance.

The mentees focused on breaking clear goals into manageable steps and being authentic in their artwork and pricing, and they learned how to market themselves and engage with community while understanding the importance of cultural awareness. The sessions also covered navigating grants and community to grow as professionals in the art world.

After the workshops on the second day, they went to an Aboriginal cultural heritage site that had been found on the property with markings denoting songlines and shelters used by first nations people before colonisation. Tania and Rodney also showed them sites of grinding stones where aboriginal people gathered to sharpen tools and grind grain, after which the group settled at the top of the site and Tania shared the Story of the "Red Chief" who Tania herself is a descendant from.

At the end of the trip, the group travelled down the road to Quirindi to see the Silo Art Mural and Light Show before returning back to the Art Shack to say goodbye and thank you for all the home-cooked meals, including crocodile stew, emu burgers, barramundi and kangaroo skewers.

A shout out of congratulations to the seven artist

A shout out of congratulations to the seven artists exhibited in Regional Futures: An Entangled Existence at the Basil Sellers Exhibition Centre in Moruya!

This exhibition brings together the works developed for the Regional Futures exhibition at Casula Powerhouse in 2023 and shares them with this south coast audience.

In unison with this, an extended essay exploring the topics raised in the works has been published on the climate cultures website.

The artists in this current exhibition are Laura Baker (Blayney), Anna Glynn (Jaspers Brush), Kim V. Goldsmith (Dubbo), Tania Hartigan (Wallabadah), Tracy Luff (Goulburn), Jane Richens (Dungog) and Joanne Stead (Tamworth).��

Regional Futures is an initiative of the NSW Regional Arts Network. The Regional Arts Development Organisations of the network supported these artists to present this work at the Bas.�

Recently, the Graphic Design/Illustration group & the Fashion, Textiles/Costume Design group from Horizons mentorship program came together in Sydney from across regional NSW.

The mentees started with a Creative Speed Dating session to get to know about each other and their creative work, then travelled around the park collecting inspiration and photos and compiling a mood board.

The Design group with Georgia, Faith, Ruby and Ruth along with their mentor Sally Huguenin @redsallystudio visited Missy Dempsey Design Studios in Surry Hills, where @missydempsey showed them around her studio, and gave them a workshop and exercise around getting inspiration and finding their ‘North Star’.

Members of the Theatre group in the Horizons mento

Members of the Theatre group in the Horizons mentoring program met up last month in Bathurst, meeting each other and their mentor Kate Smith for the first time at the @bmec_bx for the launch of the inaugural EAST Festival!

The participants Max Burrows, Bethany Osborne, Isabella Hughes and Lillianlee Harris started their time together by working with @katesmithyoga on physical movement exercises, and were taken on a tour of the Charles Sturt University theatre media facilities by Karl Shead, who also gave a talk on the technical aspects of theatre production including set and costume design processes.

Later, the group went through more acting exercises with Kate using different techniques to expand their understanding of a piece or excerpt they had brought with them, and were fortunate to receive a Director’s workshop from Bali Padda (@little_goat_arts) before seeing his production of "Guards at the Taj" (written by Rajiv Joseph, touring from the National Theatre Of Parramatta @ntofp) that evening as part of the EAST festival.
