Amanda Roach

Outback Arts

Growing up on a farm, surrounded by the rhythm of nature and the quiet poetry of open skies, I, an 18-year-old artist (she/her), have always found art to be my language of connection. Although my love for creating began in childhood, it was during my time at boarding school that my artistic journey truly blossomed. There, I embraced the challenge of growth, exploring the depths of art-making and refining my skills.

I work across a spectrum of materials, from the bold vibrancy of acrylics to the delicate precision of graphite and the infinite possibilities of digital mediums. Found objects from the land where I live often find their way into my work, adding texture, history, and meaning. Experimentation fuels me—I find joy in mixing, layering, and pushing boundaries to uncover new forms of expression.

At the heart of my practice lies an exploration of human experience and the raw, undeniable beauty of the natural world. My work seeks to reflect emotion and memory, capturing fleeting moments that feel both universal and deeply personal. Through painting, drawing, and assembling site-sourced materials, I aim to weave a tapestry of stories—of life, love, and the interconnectedness of all living things.

Artwork description

The Hidden Rose, 2024 acrylic on Canvas

Artist Statement

‘The Hidden Rose’ (2024) is a 60×80 cm celebration of beauty found in unexpected places and the resilience of nature. The piece uses an acrylic base as its foundation, creating a vibrant backdrop for textured roses crafted from paste and sand. These three-dimensional elements invite the viewer to engage not only visually but also tangibly, with the rugged yet delicate surfaces. The sand, sourced from a place close to my heart, carries the weight of memory and the earth’s quiet strength. Each rose emerges imperfectly, layered with emotion and intention, symbolizing growth, vulnerability, and the hidden treasures we often overlook in life. This artwork invites reflection on the beauty that thrives in adversity and the importance of noticing what lies beneath the surface. ‘The Hidden Rose’ is both a physical and emotional experience, blending texture and color to remind us that even in the most unlikely conditions, life blooms.
