Steven Hopwood

Orana Arts

I feel like I’ve been really lucky, although I also try very hard and take every opportunity, to be where I am at my age. I have had the benefit of both opportunity and encouraging and supportive teachers, tutors and mentors, as well as those in the industry I have met.

I have attended multiple community events as a singer of the anthem or other songs, such as “I was only 19” for RSL sub-branch events, I have participated at a raft of eisteddfod events, both online and in person, plus performance evenings with my School or within the various communities.

I have held lead or showcase roles in productions such as Kinkyboots, Legally Blonde and Chicago Teen Edition and will hold one in Grease next year.

A highlight of my career so far were the opportunity to sing at two NRL events and a State Crime Conference. I have been involved heavily with the Gunnedah Conservatorium and New England Conservatorium, Chamber Choirs and Jazz Choirs. Some highlights are singing with Todd McKenney and AVE. I have also attended camps with the Australian Theatre for Young People and Orana Arts, and received a partial scholarship from the Australian Musical Theatre Academy Summer Camp, plus I have attended an AMTA workshop for auditions. I have also attended an AMTA/Gondwana workshop. Participating in Horizons has been an amazing experience and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of it and grow off the program

THE UNLUCKY GUY (A CABARET BY STEVEN HOPWOOD)

An adolescent is struggling in life, with no purpose and is considering himself unlucky.
However with Hope and Curiosity may he improve and find the positives in life bringing
him forward to block out the negatives and bring out the best out the best version of
himself.

He walks in, dumbfounded by the size of the crowd.

Luke: Hey there! You k-know it’s great to see you here, well I hope you haven’t gone to too
much trouble. Did you cancel plans or a-are you sure? You know I don’t usually have this much
of an audience. Normally, people don’t look at my performances, but I mean it is really great to
have you here! But I’m glad my Mum is always here (smile) Hi Mum!

Luke: Oh well… anyways I’m Luke, I’m from around here, I’m that guy who works at Beak
Boutique, you know? The pet shop that only sells birds! The assistant bird manager! I tend to
keep out of the spotlight as much as I can, you know? When I come off stage people just treat
me like I’m a Rocko’s worker. Wait, wait, wait! Not that being a Rocko’s worker is bad… Yikes,
sorry.

Luke: Wait, are you sure you’re able to stay here for the whole thing, it’s really okay if you can’t.
I totally understand, Oh okay! Great! Well my girlfriend Monica could be here any second! Have
you seen her? Oh! She’s so pretty, she’s prettier than Commbank stadium, you know? The
home of the legendary Parramatta Eels, She didn’t seem too happy when I told her that. She
must be a Panthers fan. Phone rings*

Luke: Hey! I thought there were no phones in the venue! Courtesy!
He looks into his pocket*
Oh goodness, I’m sorry. It’s my nan.

(On call)

Sorry, I’m sorry. I promise I won’t be long.
Hey Nan, hey yeah. I’m performing right now. Can I call you back after. I promise I’ll help you
cook the chicken pie when I get home! Yes, okay! Oka-okay! Okay, love you! Bye, bye, bye.

Hangs up*

Luke: I’m so sorry I truly am, I thought that would’ve been Monica, she doesn’t really call me
nowadays. Usually I’m the one to call. But that’s okay! You have to make sacrifices for love!

SONG – THE SCIENTIST – COLDPLAY

Luke: Well, my girlfriend Monica was supposed to be here, it’s going on to our two week
anniversary. You know well I’ve never really been so lucky in my life. We met while I was
working as the assistant bird manager at Beak Boutique and was standing by the macaws who
don’t really like me and bite me and then Monica asked me where the bird seed is and I knew
where the bird seed exactly is because I had only just restocked it 20 minutes before, so of
course I knew where the seed was and she was super impressed with my navigation skills, then
we exchanged numbers and kicked it off instantly. Look at these flowers I got her! She is as
gorgeous as that Scarlet Macaw I have in the window for eight-thousand dollars. I thought she
would’ve been here much sooner! Oh well, she might be a little bit late. Well I mean-

Phone rings once again*
Luke is extremely frustrated and groans.

Luke: Oh It’s my girlfriend, she’s probably calling me because she’s telling me she’s parking the
car, or she’s running a little bit late. I told her about the show and I got her a bunch of flowers.

Answers*

Hey gorgeous! How are you? Are you okay? How was your weekend? Are you here? Are you?

Pause…

(Sad)

Oh… thanks for the heads up. I’m sorry, yeah okay. Goodbye.

Hangs up*

Luke: She broke up with me… I wasn’t good enough for her. I’m as sad as Amber Heard’s dog
when it stepped on a bee. (Amber Heard Face)

Today truly isn’t my favourite day, well… What about these flowers I bought for her? What about
the card I bought her? I spent forty bucks on that. Oh well, I guess it is what it is. Well…

Shrugs*

SONG – Bad Day – Daniel Powter

Part 3: Maybe I dont need a girlfriend because I have you guys here. Here you have a flower.
No you deserve one too!

Luke: You know, maybe I don’t need to worry about what is really happening in my life, I’m not
struggling. Like I may have had my girlfriend break up with me (starts daydreaming) I can still
remember the time we first met in the pet food aisle. Anyways, that isn’t what I’m trying to say.

Luke: Why should I worry? Honestly. Because I have all of you watching me, and I’m very
happy. I honestly thought it would be the usual people like Mum and Nan. With all of you here it
makes me feel special and wanted. You know what? I had these flowers here for my girlfriend
but I guess I don’t need a girl. Because I have you guys here, I think I’ll be okay, I may be
unlucky but hey! I’m okay.

(Starts handing out flowers)

Here, you have a flower!, you! I can’t forget you! Have a flower!

Artist Statement

My name is Steven Hopwood. I was born and raised in Gunnedah, NSW and I currently attend the Armidale School. Music and performing is not only my passion, its my career goal

I was 5 years old when I attended my first music lesson. I have had a love for singing ever since and there is a “magic” in performing; taking on a role and becoming that character and making the audience believe you are, or bringing out emotions when singing songs, both in the audience and myself.

I live for the performing arts and would love to make it a career; I can’t ever see myself becoming tired of it, even though it takes a lot of work to achieve a “polished” performance.

My first eisteddfod performance was at 7 years and from there I have taken every opportunity to be in Musicals, since first performing as Young Charlie in the musical, Kinkyboots, when I was around 10 years old.

I have been writing a cabaret through the mentorship of group 11’s Tim Hansen, I have named my play ‘The Unlucky Guy’ And with the assistance of Tim, I have been able to successfully write a cabaret that will be performed in January of 2025. Without Tim and the Horizons careers launchpad, I wouldn’t have ever been able to do that.

Not only have I seen growth through this program, my public speaking capabilities and writing skills have gone through the roof and that is something that I’m extremely grateful for.
